Rosehip oil - a nutrient dense and all around amazing oil for skin health and regeneration

Rosehip oil is derived from the rosa canina rose bush commonly grown in Europe and South America. Unlike rose oil, which is extracted from rose petals and has a wonderful rose scent, rosehip oil is pressed from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant and doesn’t have a rosey scent. It’s scent is more reminiscent of seeds and grass and it is strong in the unrefined organic oil, however it does not linger on the skin. Rosehips have been prized for their valuable healing benefits since ancient times. The oil pressed from the seeds is loaded with skin-nourishing vitamins and essential fatty acids. It also contains phenols that have been shown to have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

Rosehip oil contains a wealth of essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acid. Fatty acids help to keep cell walls strong so that they don’t lose water. The high fatty acids profile of rosehip oil makes it an excellent choice for hydrating dry, itchy skin. The skin also easily absorbs the oil, allowing the nutrients to sink in deep into the skin’s layers.

Because rosehip oil is high in vitamins A and C it can help reduce skin dullness and leave it glowing. This is because vitamin A (or retinol) encourages skin cell turnover and  Vitamin C aids in cell regeneration. Both vitamins are also necessary for the production of collagen in our bodies thereby helping keep your skin elastic as we age. Retinoids (compenents of vitamin A) are known for their ability to reduce hyperpigmentation and other visible signs of ageing with regular use.

Rosehip is also rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins, and the antioxidant vitamin E - all known for their anti-inflammatory effects. This makes reship oil useful in conditions where there is skin inflammation such as rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis.

Damage from a lifetime of exposure to the sun plays a major role in premature ageing. UV exposure can also interfere with the body’s ability to produce collagen. Because rosehip oil contains antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E it can help to synergistically combat visible sun damage and help prevent photo-ageing.

Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which are integral for tissue and cell regeneration in the skin. It’s no wonder that the oil has long been used as a folk remedy for wound healing, as well as the reduction of scars and fine lines. Rosehip’s scar reducing properties were studied recently - click here to read the study.

As you can see, rosehip oil is an amazing natural oil vital for skin health and regeneration, which is why we use it in many of our face and body care products.
